As a result, expenses as a share of revenue declined from 91.9% in the same quarter last year to 88.0% in the current quarter. The expense-to-revenue ratio of 88.0% is the lowest across the five quarters for which data is available, after the ratio had been above 91% in each of the prior four quarters.
Cost of materials consumed was the largest expense at ₹1,450.36 crore, representing 53.7% of revenue. The company recorded a negative change in inventories of ₹33.82 crore, meaning the value of finished goods and work-in-progress increased during the quarter, which reduced the net cost of materials consumed. Employee benefit expense was ₹226.77 crore, and depreciation and amortisation stood at ₹126.29 crore.
Other expenses, which include selling, administrative, and operational costs, were ₹585.85 crore. This was 10.8% higher than the same quarter last year but below the 13.3% rate of revenue growth, contributing to the margin improvement. Finance costs were ₹23.13 crore, with limited variation across the past five quarters.
Profit before exceptional items and tax reached ₹402.24 crore in Q1 FY2026-27, compared to ₹264.05 crore in the same quarter last year and ₹206.21 crore in the preceding quarter. The year-over-year increase of 52.3% was driven by the combined effect of higher revenue and improved expense efficiency.
Tax expense for the quarter was ₹103.51 crore, representing an effective rate of 25.7%. The preceding quarter (Q4 FY2025-26) had a lower effective tax rate of 13.3%.
Profit from continuing operations after tax was ₹298.73 crore. The company’s share of profit from associates and joint ventures added ₹15.83 crore, resulting in a total net profit of ₹314.56 crore for the period.
