Friday’s close showed a clear gap between the modest losses in the headline indices and the deeper weakness across the broader market. The Nifty 50 fell 0.75% and the Sensex 0.17%, while the typical stock declined 2.6%; just 312 stocks advanced against 1,949 declines. The narrow participation extended to the benchmarks, with only 24% of Nifty 50 constituents and 26.7% of Sensex constituents rising. Breadth worsened from 516 advances and 1,284 declines at the open to 312 advances and 1,949 declines at the close. Although breadth improved from the 14:15 snapshot of 190 advances and 1,976 declines, the recovery was not enough to alter the closing imbalance. Sector performance also varied: the typical Chemicals stock fell 3.1%, compared with a 1.4% decline in Media & Entertainment. The central takeaway is that index-level losses understated the breadth and depth of Friday’s market weakness.
