Vedanta Limited reported a mixed financial result for the quarter ended 30 June 2026. Revenue from operations declined both sequentially and compared to the prior year, yet profitability improved. This divergence occurred because total expenses and finance costs fell at a faster pace than sales. Pre-tax profit grew compared to both the previous quarter and the same period last year, though a higher absolute tax charge limited the sequential growth in net profit.
Revenue from operations for the quarter stood at ₹24,205 crore. This represents a 1.64% decrease from the preceding quarter (₹24,609 crore) and a 36.01% decline compared to the first quarter of the prior fiscal year (₹37,824 crore).
A notable distinction emerged when comparing consolidated revenue to segment-level performance. Segment revenue from operations was reported at ₹33,515 crore, exceeding the consolidated figure. In the previous quarter, segment revenue was ₹52,851 crore. The difference between segment and consolidated revenue narrowed significantly during the quarter. Inter-segment revenue also declined sharply, falling to ₹80 crore from ₹487 crore in the prior quarter. Year-on-year, segment revenue decreased by 10.47%, while consolidated revenue fell by 36.01%.
The primary factor supporting profitability was a reduction in expenses that outpaced the decline in revenue. Total expenses were recorded at ₹17,558 crore, a decrease of 8.16% from the previous quarter and a 46.4% drop compared to the same quarter last year. Because expenses fell more sharply than revenue, the spread between top-line sales and operational costs widened.
Finance costs also saw a marked decrease. At ₹662 crore, finance costs dropped by 10.18% sequentially and fell by 67.32% compared to the first quarter of the prior fiscal year (₹2,026 crore). The lower finance charges helped support pre-tax earnings alongside the drop in other operating expenses.
Profit before tax (PBT) increased to ₹7,189 crore in the current quarter. This marks a 21.68% increase from the previous quarter (₹5,908 crore) and an 18.77% increase year-on-year (₹6,053 crore). Segment profit before tax followed a similar trajectory, rising to ₹10,630 crore, though this was down 22.46% from the ₹13,709 crore reported in the previous quarter.
Despite the rise in pre-tax profit, the profit for the period decreased to ₹7,918 crore from ₹9,352 crore in the prior quarter, a decline of 15.33%. This sequential drop in net profit occurred alongside an increase in the absolute tax charge. Tax expense rose to ₹1,895 crore, up 14.29% from the previous quarter (₹1,658 crore) and 18.73% higher than the same quarter last year (₹1,596 crore). Consequently, while the company generated more pre-tax value than a year ago, the higher absolute tax payment limited the sequential recovery in net profit. Year-on-year, however, the profit for the period remains elevated, increasing by 77.65% from ₹4,457 crore in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year.
The quarter demonstrates that Vedanta Limited achieved higher profitability despite lower revenue, driven primarily by a substantial reduction in expenses and finance costs. While pre-tax profit grew both sequentially and year-on-year, the net profit for the period dipped slightly from the previous quarter due to an increase in the absolute tax charge. Observers of the financials should note the narrowing gap between segment revenue and consolidated revenue, as well as the continued downward trend in finance costs, which have materially supported the bottom line.
