Comprehensive Section Breakdown for Torrent Power
Strategic Vision: Integrated power utility generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity.
• Integrated electricity value chain operations
• Diverse power generation sources
• Extensive transmission and distribution networks
Torrent Power Limited’s revenue for the first quarter of FY2026-27 rose 26.8% from the previous quarter’s low, reaching ₹8,124.15 crore. Year-on-year growth was modest at 2.75%, while net profit fell over 10% from the same period last year. Higher finance costs and a larger tax charge corresponded with the earnings decline, even as profit recovered sharply from the weak preceding quarter.
Profit before tax (PBT) for the quarter stood at ₹925.19 crore, 6.1% lower than the ₹985.34 crore reported in Q1 FY2025-26. Despite higher revenue, a sharp increase in finance costs contributed to the drop in pre-tax earnings. Sequentially, PBT more than doubled from ₹547.36 crore in the prior quarter.
Profit after tax (PAT) came in at ₹661.85 crore, down 10.8% from ₹741.58 crore a year earlier, though it nearly doubled sequentially from ₹331.49 crore. Basic and diluted earnings per share were ₹12.68, compared with ₹14.52 in the year-ago quarter.
Total tax expense for the quarter was ₹263.34 crore, up 8.03% year-on-year and 22.0% sequentially. The effective tax rate (tax expense as a percentage of PBT) rose to 28.5% from 24.7% in Q1 last year. This increase was driven primarily by a larger deferred tax charge of ₹41.35 crore, up 36.2% from the prior year, while current tax rose modestly to ₹221.99 crore. The higher tax charge reduced net profit further.
Torrent Power’s first quarter of FY2026-27 showed a sharp sequential recovery in both revenue and profit from the preceding quarter’s trough, with revenue surpassing ₹8,100 crore and profit after tax more than doubling. Year-on-year, however, the top line grew only modestly and bottom-line profitability contracted. Higher finance costs and a higher effective tax rate – partly from a bigger deferred tax charge – corresponded with the earnings decline. While the sequential bounce is notable, the company’s earnings remained well below the year-ago level.
