Birlasoft reported steady revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, with pre-tax profit rising faster than sales due to a wider profit margin. Net profit declined slightly compared to the previous quarter because the tax expense increased, even though pre-tax earnings were higher. Year-over-year, both revenue and net profit showed substantial gains.
Birlasoft’s first quarter delivered solid year-over-year growth in revenue and pre-tax profit, supported by a wider profit margin. The sequential decline in net profit resulted from a higher effective tax rate rather than weaker operating performance. Earnings per share and comprehensive income also reflected the impact of tax changes and non-operating items, while the underlying pre-tax trajectory remained positive.

Revenue from operations reached ₹1,379.40 crore in Q1 FY2026-27, up 2.28% from the preceding quarter and 7.35% from the same quarter last year. This sequential pace followed a nearly flat growth period in the prior quarter. Total operating expenses, including employee benefits, other expenses, depreciation, and finance costs, totaled ₹1,178.21 crore. Employee benefit expenses accounted for ₹837.87 crore, while other expenses rose 2.05% sequentially to ₹316.72 crore but remained 3.08% below the year-ago level. Finance costs and depreciation added ₹4.30 crore and ₹19.32 crore, respectively.
These expense trends contributed to an expansion in profitability. Pre-tax profit margin widened to 16.54% from 12.93% a year ago and held steady at 16.48% compared to the prior quarter. Pre-tax profit itself increased to ₹228.17 crore, up 2.65% sequentially and 37.31% year-over-year.
Net profit for the period came in at ₹161.00 crore, down 8.49% from ₹175.93 crore in Q4 FY2025-26, despite the increase in pre-tax profit. A higher effective tax rate offset the rise in pre-tax earnings, resulting in the sequential net profit decline. The effective tax rate moved from 20.85% in the prior quarter to 29.45% in the current quarter. Tax expense totalled ₹67.18 crore, compared to ₹46.35 crore previously.
On a year-over-year basis, net profit grew 51.26% from ₹106.43 crore, aligning with the stronger pre-tax earnings and a tax rate of 29.45% versus 35.95% a year ago. Other income contributed ₹29.03 crore during the quarter.
Comprehensive income fell to ₹157.51 crore from ₹314.67 crore in the prior quarter, indicating significant non-profit items impacted the total. Compared to the year-ago quarter, comprehensive income rose 15.18% from ₹136.75 crore.
Basic earnings per share decreased to ₹5.72 from ₹6.27 in the preceding quarter, mirroring the net profit movement. Diluted EPS followed at ₹5.70. Both measures increased significantly from the year-ago levels of ₹3.81 and ₹3.78, respectively.
