## Quarterly financials

# Operating profit before provisions rises sharply on higher other income, but large tax expense limits net profit growth

UCO Bank’s operating profit before provisions increased sharply in the first quarter of FY2026-27, driven by a large jump in other income and a decline in operating expenses. However, profit after tax rose only 8% from a year ago and fell 18% from the previous quarter, as a substantial increase in tax expense absorbed most of the operating gain. Asset quality continued to improve, with the gross NPA ratio falling to 2.08% from 2.17% in the March quarter and 2.63% a year ago.

## Revenue and operating profit before provisions

Total interest earned rose 8.7% year-on-year to ₹6,996 crore, while interest expended grew 3.8% to ₹4,188 crore. Because interest income grew faster than interest expense, net interest income increased from the year-ago period.

Other income, which includes fees, trading gains and other non‑interest revenue, was the standout item. It rose 69% year-on‑year to ₹1,686 crore and more than doubled from the March quarter (₹709 crore). Operating expenses fell 8.3% year-on‑year to ₹1,685 crore, with employee costs down 9.0% and other operating expenses down 6.9%.

These factors lifted operating profit before provisions and contingencies to ₹2,810 crore, an increase of approximately 80% from both the year-ago period and the preceding quarter.

## Provisions and tax impact

Provisions other than tax and contingencies declined further, to ₹235 crore. This was less than half the ₹616 crore recorded a year earlier and 28% lower than the March quarter.

Profit before tax reached ₹2,575 crore, compared with ₹946 crore a year ago and ₹1,247 crore in the previous quarter. However, tax expense rose sharply to ₹1,919 crore, up from ₹339 crore a year earlier and ₹446 crore in the prior quarter. Consequently, profit after tax was ₹656 crore, an 8% increase year‑on‑year but an 18% decline from the March quarter.

## Asset quality and capital

Gross non‑performing assets declined further, to ₹5,667 crore. The gross NPA ratio improved to 2.08% from 2.17% in March and 2.63% a year ago. The bank’s CET1 ratio rose to 17.22%, up from 16.36% in the previous quarter.

## Key takeaway

UCO Bank’s first quarter saw a sharp increase in operating profit before provisions, driven by higher other income, lower operating expenses and an improvement in net interest income. However, a sharp rise in tax expense kept net profit growth modest on a year‑on‑year basis and led to a sequential decline. Asset quality and capital ratios continued to improve during the quarter.
