# Revenue Reaches a New High, but Tax Swing Widens Sequential Profit Decline

JSW Cement Limited reported revenue from operations of ₹1,896.41 crore for the first quarter of FY2026-27 ended June 30, 2026. Revenue rose 21.6% from the same quarter last year and was slightly above the immediately preceding quarter. Profit before exceptional items and tax declined sequentially, and profit for the period fell more sharply as the tax line swung from a credit in the prior quarter to an expense in the current quarter.

## Revenue and Pre-Exceptional Profit

Revenue from operations was ₹1,896.41 crore, up from ₹1,559.82 crore in Q1 FY2025-26 and marginally above ₹1,894.99 crore in Q4 FY2025-26. It was the highest revenue among the five consecutive quarters reported.

Profit before exceptional items and tax was ₹177.44 crore, down 16.8% from ₹213.27 crore in Q4 FY2025-26. The decline occurred even though revenue was nearly flat from the previous quarter. On a year-on-year basis, profit before exceptional items and tax rose 7.8% from ₹164.61 crore.

Profit before tax was also ₹177.44 crore, compared with ₹208.83 crore in Q4. Profit for the period was ₹153.43 crore, versus ₹361.65 crore in Q4 and a loss of ₹1,366.41 crore in Q1 last year.

## Tax and Exceptional Items

In the current quarter, profit before tax and profit before exceptional items and tax were identical at ₹177.44 crore, meaning no exceptional-item difference was recorded. In Q1 FY2025-26, profit before tax was -₹1,301.77 crore while profit before exceptional items and tax was ₹164.61 crore, reflecting a large exceptional loss.

The tax line moved from a credit of ₹146.77 crore in Q4 FY2025-26 to an expense of ₹36.73 crore in Q1 FY2026-27, a swing of ₹183.50 crore. This tax swing accounted for approximately 88% of the ₹208.22 crore sequential decline in profit for the period. Reported tax expense represented about 20.7% of reported profit before tax.

## Finance Costs and Other Quarterly Expenses

Finance costs were ₹97.35 crore, up 9.6% from ₹88.80 crore in Q4 FY2025-26 and down 4.7% from ₹102.16 crore in Q1 FY2025-26. Other income was ₹73.78 crore in the quarter. Additional quarterly expense lines included cost of materials consumed at ₹443.72 crore, employee benefit expense at ₹97.72 crore, and depreciation, depletion and amortisation expense at ₹97.54 crore.

## Other Comprehensive Income

Other comprehensive income was ₹29.23 crore, higher than the ₹2.28 crore reported in Q4 FY2025-26 and the negative readings in earlier quarters. Combined with profit for the period, comprehensive income for the quarter totaled ₹182.66 crore.

## Key Takeaway

Revenue from operations reached its highest level in the latest five quarters, rising 21.6% year-on-year. Profit before exceptional items and tax fell from the previous quarter even though revenue was nearly flat. Profit for the period declined more sharply primarily because the previous quarter included a tax credit and the current quarter recorded a tax expense; no exceptional-item difference was recorded in the current quarter.
