## Quarterly financials

- Latest complete quarter: fy27_q1

# Gross Premiums Rose While Earned Revenue Declined as Claims Provisions Surged

General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) reported a quarter where gross premiums written increased by over 9% year-on-year, but revenue recognized from those policies declined slightly. A sharp rise in claims reserves and higher commission costs compressed profitability, leading to a 23.4% drop in pre-tax profit and a 31.1% decline in post-tax profit compared to the same period last year. The solvency ratio increased to 0.0432 from 0.0385 a year earlier.

## Revenue Recognition and Premium Dynamics

Gross premiums written reached ₹13,541.51 crore, an increase of 21.33% from the previous quarter and 9.05% from the same period last year. Net premiums written grew 7.59% year-on-year to ₹12,720.56 crore. The net retention ratio edged down to 0.9394 from 0.9522 a year ago, indicating a slightly higher proportion of premiums ceded to reinsurers relative to the prior year.

A divergence emerged between new business volume and recognized revenue. Premium earned—the amount recognized as income in the current period—declined by 1.56% year-on-year to ₹11,097.77 crore. This indicates that a larger portion of newly written premiums remained unearned at quarter-end, which will be recognized in future periods. Investment income contributed ₹2,186.93 crore, rising 12.2% sequentially but remaining 3.54% lower than the prior year period. Total operating income stood at ₹13,360.54 crore, down 1.35% year-on-year.

## Claims Provisioning and Underwriting Results

The most significant shift in the quarter was the movement in claims liabilities. Incurred claims totaled ₹9,755.47 crore, roughly flat year-on-year (-0.35%), but represented a substantial 23.53% increase from the previous quarter.

This sequential increase coincided with a sharp rise in the change in outstanding claims, which measures adjustments to the liability for unpaid claims. That adjustment jumped to ₹2,387.88 crore, up 133.62% from the prior quarter and 29.05% from the prior year. Meanwhile, cash paid for claims decreased by 7.21% year-on-year to ₹7,367.59 crore. The increase in provisions pushed the incurred claim ratio to 0.879 (87.9%), up from 0.8684 (86.84%) a year ago. When combined with other underwriting costs, the overall combined ratio deteriorated to 1.0778 (107.78%), compared to 1.0343 (103.43%) in the prior year. A combined ratio above 1.0 indicates that underwriting operations alone generated a loss before accounting for investment income.

## Expense Structure and Profitability Compression

Operating expenses rose to ₹12,230.93 crore, an increase of 3.63% year-on-year. Within this aggregate, net commission expenses increased by 27.26% year-on-year to ₹2,391.89 crore. This growth rate significantly outpaced the growth in gross premiums written, causing the commission expense relative to premium volume to widen. Employee remuneration and welfare expenses also saw a marked increase, rising 134.06% year-on-year to ₹87.89 crore. These movements contributed to the expenses of management ratio, which moved from 0.0069 to 0.0108.

Pre-tax profit fell to ₹2,314.51 crore, a decrease of 23.4% year-on-year. Post-tax profit declined further to ₹1,743.67 crore, a 31.1% drop. The steeper decline in post-tax profit compared to pre-tax profit was influenced by the effective tax rate. Derived tax expense increased to ₹570.84 crore from ₹490.90 crore a year earlier, raising the effective tax rate from approximately 16.2% to 24.7%.

The arithmetic difference between operating income (₹13,360.54 crore) and operating expenses (₹12,230.93 crore) is ₹1,129.61 crore. This figure is distinct from the reported pre-tax profit of ₹2,314.51 crore, indicating that items outside these two reported lines contribute to the overall profit before tax.

## Capital Position

Despite the contraction in earnings, the solvency ratio increased to 0.0432 from 0.0385 a year earlier.

## Management Commentary

GIC Re's standalone Q1 FY27 profit after tax rose 9.69% YoY to ₹1,922.04 crore, with gross premium up 8.8% to ₹13,475.36 crore. The combined ratio improved to 104.88% from 106.94%, underwriting loss narrowed to ₹723.87 crore, and solvency strengthened to 4.32. Growth was led by life, health and marine cargo, while international premium declined 5.8%.

On outlook, GIC Re said it expects to maintain market leadership on strong financials, adequate capacity and expertise. It sees pricing discipline strengthening as insurers list and the market consolidates, and reiterated a strategic focus on reducing reliance on investment income while scaling the Lloyd's syndicate toward a 60:40 domestic-international risk portfolio.

## Key Takeaway

In Q1 FY2026-27, GIC Re's gross premiums written grew by over 9% year-on-year, but premium earned declined slightly, and costs rose. The company increased its reserves for future claims sharply, and commission costs grew faster than premium volume. These factors compressed profitability, resulting in a 31% year-on-year decline in post-tax profit. The solvency ratio improved compared to a year earlier.
