## Quarterly financials

- Latest complete quarter: fy27_q1

# Net profit rises sharply sequentially on lower provisions and tax, but operating profit declines year-on-year as other income falls

Central Bank of India’s first quarter of FY2026-27 showed a large sequential jump in net profit, driven by a combination of lower provisions and a sharp drop in tax expense. However, the underlying operating profit fell compared to the same quarter last year, as a steep decline in other income offset solid growth in interest income. Asset quality metrics were mixed: the gross non-performing asset ratio continued to improve, while the net NPA ratio edged slightly higher.

## Revenue: Interest income growth offsets sharp decline in other income

Total revenue from operations (interest earned plus other income) was ₹10,714.39 crore, up 2.9% from ₹10,410.11 crore a year earlier. The increase came entirely from interest earned, which rose 12.8% year-on-year to ₹9,725.90 crore. Revenue on investments grew 13.0% over the same period to ₹2,646.31 crore, consistent with the overall interest income trend.

Other income, however, fell sharply. At ₹988.49 crore, it was 44.7% lower than the ₹1,786.73 crore recorded in Q1 last year and 14.9% below the preceding quarter’s ₹1,161.31 crore. This decline was the main factor behind the year-on-year drop in operating profit.

## Expenses: Interest costs rise, operating costs fall

Interest expended increased 11.0% year-on-year to ₹5,793.95 crore, slightly below the pace of interest income growth. As a result, net interest income (interest earned minus interest expended) rose 15.6% from a year ago to ₹3,931.95 crore. Sequentially, however, net interest income fell 2.2% because interest expense grew faster than interest income in the latest quarter.

Operating expenses (employee costs plus other operating expenses) totalled ₹2,724.19 crore, down 5.2% from a year earlier and down 11.2% from the March quarter. Employee costs fell 4.1% year-on-year to ₹1,763.64 crore, while other operating expenses dropped 7.1% to ₹960.55 crore. The sequential decline in other operating expenses was particularly large at 24.0%.

## Operating profit: Sequential improvement, year-on-year decline

Operating profit before provisions and contingencies was ₹2,196.25 crore, up 3.9% from the March quarter but down 5.1% from ₹2,315.41 crore in Q1 last year. The year-on-year decline reflects the drop in other income, which more than offset the growth in net interest income and the reduction in operating expenses.

## Provisions and tax: Lower charges boost net profit

Provisions and contingencies (the difference between operating profit and profit before tax) amounted to ₹405.03 crore, down from ₹505.01 crore
