The divergence between the monthly bullish Supertrend and the weaker daily/weekly trends warrants close observation for any trend confirmation or reversal signals.

# Operating Profit Jumps 23% While Net Profit Slumps 53% on Higher Provisions

Bank of Baroda’s Q1 FY2026-27 results showed a sharp contrast between operating performance and bottom-line earnings. Operating profit before provisions rose 23.3% year-on-year, driven by growth in net interest income and other income. However, net profit fell 53.1% as provisions and contingencies surged. Operating expenses were nearly flat, and the CET1 capital ratio improved from the previous quarter but remained below the prior-year level.

## Profitability: Operating Growth Offset by Higher Provisions

The bank’s operating profit before provisions and contingencies reached ₹10,583.94 crore, up from ₹8,585.63 crore in Q1 FY2025-26. This 23.3% increase was supported by higher interest and other income.

However, profit before tax dropped to ₹2,205.54 crore from ₹5,169.66 crore a year earlier. The decline was driven by a sharp rise in provisions and contingencies—the difference between operating profit and profit before tax. That difference widened to ₹8,378.40 crore from ₹3,415.97 crore, an increase of ₹4,962.43 crore (145.3%).

After tax, net profit stood at ₹1,572.59 crore, down 53.1% from ₹3,351.88 crore in the same quarter last year.

## Net Interest Income

Net interest income (interest earned minus interest expended) grew 10.0% to ₹13,813.39 crore, compared with ₹12,559.77 crore in Q1 FY2025-26.

- Interest earned rose 6.8% to ₹35,114.52 crore, led by interest on advances and bills (₹26,399.79 crore) and revenue on investments (₹7,552.27 crore).
- Interest expended increased at a slower 4.9% to ₹21,301.13 crore.

The wider gap between income and expense growth allowed net interest income to expand faster than interest earned.

Other income (non-interest income) also contributed to operating profit, rising 12.0% to ₹6,202.19 crore from ₹5,537.85 crore a year earlier.

## Operating Expenses

Total operating expenses declined 0.8% year-on-year to ₹9,431.64 crore from ₹9,511.99 crore.

- Employee costs fell 1.3% to ₹4,611.34 crore (Q1 FY2025-26: ₹4,671.86 crore). Sequentially, however, employee costs jumped 26.8% from ₹3,636.02 crore in Q4 FY2025-26.
- Other operating expenses edged down 0.4% to ₹4,820.30 crore (prior year: ₹4,840.13 crore).

## Capital Adequacy

The Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio stood at 14.36% as of 30 June 2026. This was up from 13.65% at the end of March 2026 but down from 14.84% a year earlier.
